Cookbooks for Children

RD revolting recipes jpeg gf.jpgA few days ago, Ruthie discovered the Roald Dahl Revolting Recipes Cookbook hidden amongst all my cookbooks.  Having visited the Roald Dahl museum and read some of Roald Dahl's books, she was really keen to make some of the recipes.  She's earmarked the "lickable wallpaper for nursery's" and "candy coated pencils for sucking in class" as two of the most appealing.   Going through the book I  realised that a large number of recipes are naturally gluten free and the ones that aren't are easily adapted.  I love the sense of humour, the sheer wickedness and the connection to the much loved stories in this cookbook.  I am also looking forward  to making some of the recipes like the Willy Wonka's Nutty Crunch Surprise and the Crispy Wasp Stings on a piece of buttered toast..

Fanny At Chez Panisse jpeg gf vers 2.jpg Fanny at Chez Panisse, A Child's Restaurant Adventures with 46 Recipes, is a much more sophisticated book, for children who have an interest in food and cooking.  It was written by Alice Waters the founder and proprietor of Chez Panisse in Berkely California.  For those of you unfamiliar with Alice Waters, she was really the pioneer in seasonal restaurant cooking, using ingredients sourced from local markets and suppliers.  She wrote this book for her daughter. I used this book to illustrate how I wanted The Gluten Free Cookbook for Kids, to look and feel .  I loved the tone, the illustrations and the selection of recipes.  They are very much geared to children without pandering to the mickey mouse school of children's cooking.  There are no funny pizza faces or monkey biscuits, more a selection of well thought out recipes which include everyday staples.  Sadly, not every recipe is gluten free, but there is a good many that are.  It wouldn't take a lot to convert some of the non gf recipes and so I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this as I think it is a lovely book, which extols traditional values and the love of good food.

Such a nice post. I'm also

Such a nice post. I'm also looking forward to experiment foods that are gluten free and it's kinda more exciting. Reminds me of Paula Deen's recipes. I watch her show on TV and feel like my arteries are clogging. Every time I see one of her commercials I feel like getting pay day loans to book a consult with a cardiologist. What do her cookbooks consist of – add cheese, deep fry, then add gravy?

Its good to know some recipes

Its good to know some recipes your family wanted to have.Since Easter is almost here, quite a few people might wonder how to correctly make hard boiled eggs, whether for Easter eggs or just to make them. It's easy - you will need a pot, a lid, and eggs. Cover eggs within the pot with cold water, and bring to a boil - once the water is boiling, cover tight using the lid and remove them from heat. Small eggs sit for 12, medium for 15, extra large for 18 minutes. For making deviled eggs, once you've removed them from the shell, slice lengthwise, scoop out the yolks, combine yolks with whatever sauce you wish, and add the mixture to the white part. No payday advances necessary for a cookbook.

Pencils for sucking in class

Well here's a picture of the finished item. It was certainly an experience making these and I've spent the last few hours trying to get the blue goop off the tables, chairs and door handles all around the house.  The children were obviously delighted with the results. Even our lovely friend Jane who is a dentist by trade was persuaded to have a little suck.  She pronounced them deeelicious.  Now the goop on the pencils did not set as I had imagined so the next morning we woke to find it had dripped off the pencils and on to the window sill.

Oh well, next on the agenda is lickable wallpaper for nurseries.  We will keep you postedpencils for sucking in class jpeg gf.jpg
