getting "glutened"

Has this happened to you?  Has someone accidentally given you (or your child) something containing gluten?  This is something that happens with alarming frequency in restuarants and cafes, where staff are poorly trained and perhaps are not entirely aware of the consequences of ingesting something containing gluten if you are intolerant.  If you are unaware that you have been 'glutened'  then it's possible that any symptoms you might have will not be attritbutable to gluten being present.  In some people, a reaction is immediate,  in others it can take from a couple of hours to a couple of days before you see or feel any symptoms.  What do you do when you know you've eaten something by mistake?  Is there anything you can take?  How long do the symptoms last?  Is it worse if you haven't had gluten in a long time?  Is the reaction worse depending on how much you've consumed?

My daughter got glutened recently and I am feeling incredibly anxious for her.  She is oblivious to the source of my anxiety, but I know that in the not too distant future, the consequences will manifest themselves.  It is a horrible feeling knowing that this will happen and not being able to do anything about it, It was a genuine mistake, but still, one would wish that restaurants and cafes would have tight controls and more importantly a better level of understanding.

If you've had a bad gluten experience, I'd really love to hear from you.
