Red Velvet Chocolate Heartache

I'm always fascinated by what sells.  In one of my recent lurks around the Amazon website, I was curious to know what the best selling cookbooks were.  In addition to all the Jamies, Rick Steins, Nigellas etc, I came across this cookbook.  It's written by a woman called Harry Eastwood who became famous for her Cook Yourself Thin series on TV a little while back.  Well she's back with a very handsomely printed book, this time, it's all about naughty cakes made good.  By replacing most or all of the fat in a recipe with vegetables (potatoes, courgettes, parsnips, beetroot, butternut squash and even aubergine!!!!!) Ms Eastwood has come up with some truly wacky ideas.  I was compelled to buy the book once I became aware that most of the recipes are actually gluten free.  However, I have not yet been brave enough to try some of the recipes.  Although I am really tempted to have a go at some of the weird and wonderful combinations, I am a little suspicious and very nervous that the results will have lingering vegetal notes. I have stocked up the fridge with some swede, turnips (arrgh!) courgettes, and parsnips just in case I come across all brave and I am limbering up to have a go at the parsnip fudge on page 169.  I have read the book cover to cover and it is very amusing.  There are lovely details of her testing notes which are hilarious and a lot of the writing is as crazy as some of the combinations.  For some, I fear the  charm of her very unique style may prove immensly annoying, but in small doses it is good fun.   Once I've overcome my fear and had a go, I'll let you know about the results.  If you've already had a go, please write in and tell me how it went.  In any case, I am delighted to see such a bizarre book with gluten free overtones become mainstream.

Red Velvet & Chocolate Heartache

Hi Adriana,

Wow!

Anyway, I am writing to let you know that Red Velvet & Chocolate Heartache is a wonderful book. I haven't yet tried the eggplant recipe though, but I have tried others and I can say that for me the rice flour is the most noticeable lingering note, not vegetables.

So, here's a link to my review of Harry's book, and yours as well.

All the best Kristina

Red Velvet and Chocolate Heartache

Hi Kristina,

Thanks for your comments.  I tried a recipe out this weekend (white rabbits) and was generally quite pleased with the results, ie no vegetal notes at all.  The children loved them even though they saw me putting in the courgettes.  They were deeply deeply suspicious, but were won over by the taste.  I didn't use rice flour, I used my standard gluten free Doves flour.  I really hate rice flour as I know exactly what you mean about the after taste.  I bought a fresh pack thinking I would give it another go and then bottled out at the last minute!

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to blog.

Adriana
